Documenting Influences on Production

Influences on production

Characters

The characters were mainly based on the life on mars cast which was a 2006 tv show based in the 70s. In terms of costume Philip Glenister's outfit was the most similar to what we were wearing in the film. We chose this because it is a simple look and easy to replicate with the resources we had available for our project.
Life on Mars played a big role in the personalities of the characters as well, with a gritty, harsh character as well as a more understanding character.

Storyline

The storyline was an original idea but has a similar atmosphere to ‘Se7en’ due to its sense of mystery, although it wasn't set in the 70’s there is still a classic feel to the pacing and subject matter which is serial killers, a topic prominent in the 60’s and 70’s with murderers such as Charles Manson.
The story follows two detectives, similar to our film, looking for clues to find a serial killer. In some scenes, there are interrogations which were carried over to our film.

Camera Angles

Once again ‘Se7en’ was an inspiration for camera angles because it incorporates a variety of tension building shots such as slow zooming shots, extreme close-ups and long shots were taken from far away but with a narrow-angle lens to give a claustrophobic feel.

Sound

The sound was important in our film from the start, we created an original soundtrack for our film using simple effects rather than complex scores, low pitch piano notes were used to create tension since low pitch sounds create a sense of tension.
This has been used in many films in recent years such as ‘Inception’.
