For our project, we need research on multiple soundtracks for us to get different ideas on what type of music we want for our project. Due to the copyright system, all the music that we research will need to be royalty free to avoid any legal issues or complications. Since our the genre we have chosen for our project is a horror, the music that we will research will need to have specific qualities that fit our preferences and that is suitable for our genre.
Horror-Suspense Music - ‘Haunted Places’ - Alex Lisi
With this song, there are moments in it that can create an image for the audience for multiple actions.
It starts off quiet but gets faster and this gives the effect that someone is being chased by something or is running away and the drumming can represent the antagonist getting closer or carrying actions that make them look powerful for the audience, it makes it seem more intimidating.
The middle and the end of the song seems to be based on something smaller because the xylophone-like instrument playing sounds like the threat has been outrun and that the prey has found a way to escape. This is a common theme in horror movies because it suits both internal settings such as tunnels and houses, or external settings such as forests or towns.
Overall, this soundtrack would suit a chase scene or a suspense scene since it contains sharp sounds and instruments such as a cello, violins and a drum.
Unfortunately, the project that we are planning to do does not require a soundtrack with these features since we do not plan on fast-paced scenes in our movie.
Scary Horror Music - Haunted
This starts off with a slow tempo with the instruments of a piano and a xylophone. The combined sounds give the effect of a child-like tone as if the characters on the screen have an evil presence around them but it shows them as innocent since children are seen as fragile and vulnerable.
After this series of sounds has happened, the audience should be aware that something will happen on the screen whilst feeling tense but the childish theme makes it so there is a specific level of how intense the scene is. There is a loud piano sound made which is used to scare the audience as they are feeling slightly relaxed. The piano also makes it seem like the peace in the scene is disturbed as the evil being attacks his/her prey and scares the audience but grabs their attention at the same time. This soundtrack will not be suitable for our project since we are not planning to have any jump-scares or children in our project.
Epic and Dark Electronic Music - Welcome to Chaos
This style of music is different to the other two but it does have qualities that will be suitable for a horror movie.
The beginning of the soundtrack starts off quiet but starts to get louder and has an electronic sound playing. This gives the music a type of ‘retro’ style which can is relevant to our project because or plot is set in the 1970s where the sound was common in action and horror tv shows and movies of that time.
The tempo of the track speeds up towards the middle and gives the effect that someone is being chased by something or is in a rush to get to a destination.
Like the first soundtrack, it is not well-suited to our project because our scenes do not feature any fast-paced chases and the speed of our scenes are planned to be slow.
Alternate Method
For our project, we can use software on computers to create different compositions that will suit our preferences and can fit into the sections of the scenes that we want.
This method also means the sounds are non-copyrighted and they can be altered to be improved if it is not entirely correct.
